Wonder Woman

*Important note: this picture is of me the day I bought my house on the river (2012).

I’m a big fan of poetry. The Douglas’ gave me a book titled, “Poetry Unbound 50 Poems to Open Your World” by Padraig O Tuama. The purpose was to fill my cup during my post-twofer surgery (splenectomy and hysterectomy). I finally got around to opening the pages the other day. I opened to a poem titled, “Wonder Woman.” This caught my eye for a couple of reasons.

  1. This picture of my sister. I mean it’s a good one!

2. My sister and I have a joke about how empowered women would be if there were as many woman superheroes as there are men.

So, I’ll share the end of the poem with you:

…out of the corner of my eye, I saw a girl, maybe half my age,
dressed, for no apparent reason, as Wonder Woman.
She strutted by in all her strength and glory, invincible,
eternal, and when I stood to clap (because who wouldn’t have),
she bowed and posed like she knew I needed a myth –
a woman, by a river, indestructible.

So, that has become a motto for me on this journey:

A woman, by a river, indestructible!
